Ever since Elizabeth Olsen had her breakout year at the Sundance Film Festival (where she debuted both Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House), we've been waiting for the actress' star meter to truly skyrocket along the lines of someone like, say, Jennifer Lawrence, who parlayed her indie debut (Winter's Bone) into a very successful career so far. Olsen ... not so much. She's remained on the indie charts, churning out solid performances in Liberal Arts and Kill Your Darlings -- and she'll make the leap to bigger fare with both Oldboy and next year's Godzilla -- but according to the latest rumors, Olsen may follow up Godzilla with her biggest role to date opposite the Avengers as Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron .
That's what Bleeding Cool is saying -- that Olsen was their second choice behind Saoirse Ronan, who allegedly passed on the part. If it all falls into place, Olsen would play the sister to Quicksilver, who'll reportedly be portrayed by Kick-Ass' Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The brother-sister duo are a famous one from the comics, most notably because X-Men's Magneto is their father, though because the characters are technically free to use for both Disney and Fox, the only caveat is that they cannot reference the other studio's characters. Sorry fans, the only X-Men/Avengers crossover you'll be seeing (or hearing) will come from your imagination.
Olsen would be a solid choice for the role. Like Lawrence, she brings a strong personality to the table, and it'll be fun to see the gal get her fight on. We're still not sure how Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will be used in the sequel (will they be friends, enemies ... frenemies?), but with production set to begin early next year, expect more official details to arrive soon.
What do you think? You like Olsen as Scarlet Witch? Will she be able to go toe to toe with that other Scarlett, Ms. Johansson?
Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters on May 1, 2015.
