We've written about Alfred Hitchcock's strict rules for Psycho moviegoers, but as our Twitter pal Emma Green pointed out, the director's advertising assault started with his 1954 film Rear Window . Hitch had a bold message to cinemas that didn't show his film about a photographer that witnesses something strange through his apartment window. "To those unfortunate exhibitors who have not already booked Rear Window, I would like to demonstrate the correct method of cutting your throat… " the advert read, with a photo of the director holding a very nasty razor blade.
That year, the film earned $5.3 million at the North American box office, with critics heaping endless praise upon it. Today, it's considered one of Hitch's best movies and is never absent from the "greatest films" lists, so it's hard for us to imagine movie houses excluding it from their repertoire. It's good to see the director's signature black humor put to good use. Now, heed his warning, and watch the film if you haven't already. We'll wait here until you're done.
