Disappointing 'The Hobbit' Blu-ray Details Leave Room for Greater Things to Come
That was the headline for our post outlining the special features that were set to arrive with the theatrical cut of Peter Jackson's first entry in his The Hobbit trilogy. And now it looks like the time for those greater things has come. Or, rather, we at least know when it will come: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - Extended Edition hits store shelves on November 5, 2013.
If all you care about is the movie, you'll be happy to know that you can actually buy the EE, which features 13 minutes of material put back in, as a digital download starting on October 22. But if you want the whole meal with all the fixins, you're going to have to wait two weeks. At least it'll be worth the wait this time. The theatrical Blu-rays weren't necessarily lacking in features, just in exclusivity. There's great stuff on those discs, it's just all stuff you can already watch online. The EE Blu-ray sets (there will be a 5-disc 3D version and a 3-disc 2D version) fix that with 9 hours of extras. So what will you be getting?
- Commentary with Peter Jackson, Director/Producer/Screenwriter and Philippa Boyens, Co-Producer/Screenwriter
- The Appendices – A multi-part chronological history of the filming of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, covering pre-production in the various departments of the film in the months leading up to the start of principal photography, the boot camp training for the main cast, the work done on set chronologically through the three shooting blocks and in the world of its digital effects.
- New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth
Obviously the commentary track figures in to that 9-hour count (if Jackson and Boyens talk straight through the credits, that'll be 3 hours of content on its own), so that means the remaining making-of material somehow span 6 hours of goods. That's not too shabby, not too shabby at all. Though it does set a pretty bold precedent. If there's 6+ hours of making-of material on An Unexpected Journey alone, how much overlap will there be for the next two films?
Oh, and considering the EE hits store shelves a month or so before The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters, don't be surprised to find an exclusive trailer for the latter included, perhaps via BD-live.
