Atom Egoyan's Devil's Knot is based on the controversial murder case involving three children and the three teenagers falsely accused of killing them as part of a satanic ritual. Damien Echols became the central figure of the case, singled out as the ringleader. The script is based on investigative reporter Mara Leveritt’s 2003 book of the same name, which shows how the court case became a media circus. Reese Witherspoon, Stephen Moyer, Elias Koteas, and Colin Firth star in the Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson-scripted crime drama.
Steve McQueen's highly anticipated next feature, based on the autobiography of Solomon Northup, stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as the African-American man kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery. He was a plantation worker for 12 years before his release. Also starring: Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Garret Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong'o, Adepero Oduye, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Michael Kenneth Williams, and Alfre Woodard.
TIFF is opening with the Julian Assange thriller The Fifth Estate, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the founder of WikiLeaks. The film is based in part on Daniel Domscheit-Berg's book Inside WikiLeaks: My Time with Julian Assange and the World's Most Dangerous Website as well as WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange's War on Secrecy by British journalists David Leigh and Luke Harding. Domscheit-Berg was the spokesperson for WikiLeaks until 2010, and the film focuses on the rift that developed between the men.
