"Everything You Need To Know about Aspect Ratio" covers the evolution of cinema's big screen and how it has transformed shape. At its most basic, aspect ratio describes the relationship between an image's width and height. John Hess hosts the history lesson, leading us through the very first films and the work of photographer William Kennedy Dickson who worked for Thomas Edison.
The early aspect ratio standard became 4:3, but changed in the late 1930s after sound was introduced to motion pictures. The 1950's television craze saw another shift in cinema: widescreen. Even if you flunked math in high school, Hess does a fine job explaining things. Educate yourself, below.
