The Great Gatsby star Carey Mulligan is the reported frontrunner to play former First Lady, United States Senator for New York, and 67th United States Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Wrap reports that although Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson, and Jennifer Lawrence were considered strong contenders, Mulligan's publicist has confirmed the news.
James Ponsoldt's indie biopic Rodham is aiming for a release before Clinton is expected to take a spot in the presidential election of 2016. Screenwriter Young Il Kim described the movie as a "journey of a woman who was torn between her personal desires and her professional ambition — both literally pulled her thousands of miles apart, because Bill did not want to leave Arkansas, and she did not want to leave Washington, D.C." The Black List screenplay is set during the Watergate scandal when Rodham was the youngest lawyer on the House Judiciary Committee to impeach Nixon. At the same time, she was in a long distance relationship with Arkansas law professor Bill Clinton who was pursuing his own political path.
The Daily Beast published what could be several scenes from the script, including a love scene with Bill and some foul-mouthed dialogue. The lead role has frequently been described as award-worthy.
Can Mulligan convince filmmakers she can live up to Clinton's global feminist legacy and portray the uncertainties of a torn, younger Hill?
