Drafthouse Films Plans Re-Release of Cult Horror Classic 'The Visitor' for Later This Year

The Visitor posterIf you love obscure cult films, the folks at Drafthouse Films have a new project that’s guaranteed to get you excited – a re-release of an HD-restored version of the 1979 obscurity The Visitor .

If you’re not familiar with the film, allow us to break it down for you – the tale stars filmmaker John Huston as an “intergalactic warrior battling alongside a cosmic Christ figure against a demonic eight year old girl and her pet hawk.” Yeah – let that sink in.

The film, one of a number of European knockoffs of popular American films to emerge during the era, is arguably the most ambitious of the bunch. The Visitor doesn’t look to be a pastiche of just one or two popular films – it instead draws inspiration from a multitude of other movies, including The Birds, Close Encounters, Rosemary’s Baby, and Star Wars.

The project was the brainchild of producer Ovidio Assonitis and director Michael J. Paradise. The cast not only includes Huston, but also features performances from Lance Henriksen, Glenn Ford, Franco Nero, and Shelley Winters. That alone should make you interested in seeing it.

If your curiosity is officially piqued, you can catch The Visitor when it comes to theaters, home video, and VOD services later this year. Until then, enjoy this kooky trailer for the film.
