Pioneering English photographer Eadweard Muybridge is one of the forefathers of cinema. He created what many consider to be the first movie projector (the zoopraxiscope). His early work in motion studies — in which he was often the subject — fascinated Victorian audiences. The always brilliant Tumblr Cinephilia and Beyond has spotted an interesting documentary on Muybridge, who the narrator calls an "artist, showman, and murderer."
That's because Muybridge killed a man in 1874 (ruled as "justifiable homicide") — his wife's lover, Major Harry Larkyns. The Weird World of Eadweard Muybridge features Lord of the Rings star Andy Serkis chatting about the mysterious Muybridge, who often changed his name and remained an enigma despite his profound influence on the landscape of art, technology, and cinema worldwide. Take a lunch break today, and dig into this 57-minute movie that introduces one of the strangest and most significant figures in film.
