The Big Stories
On the weekend after Easter, it is rather appropriate that the new releases would both be about resurrecting the long deceased. Instead of three days it was three decades for the film that put Sam Raimi on the map and the stone was rolled back two on Steven Spielberg's game-changing dinosaurs. Neither re-openings were record-shattering but they continued a strong trend of horror openers this year while also giving some hope to studios that maybe there can still occasionally be an audience for 3-D re-visitation.
They'll Swallow Your Soul
Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead at least certainly swallowed the soul of the original, replacing Raimi's grand sense of oddness and style with just more blood. In the spirit of its predecessor though, the budget was miniscule compared to today's average release. A $17 million cost is going to give Tri-Star its second good investment in less than a month after The Call has grossed over $45 million on a $13 million cost. On the "R"-rated side of horror, the gore-gushing remake came up short of last year's The Devil Inside and Paranormal Activity 4 and is second only to the "PG-13" Mama on this year's list. As American horror remakes go...
Friday the 13th ($40.5 million), The Haunting ($33.4), A Nightmare on Elm Street ($32.9), The Wolfman ($31.4), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre ($28.0), Dawn of the Dead ($26.7), Halloween ($26.3), Evil Dead ($26.0), The Amityville Horror ($23.5), When a Stranger Calls ($21.6)
The second weekend drops of the films on that list average 60.84%. Amongst critics, Evil Dead was only the second favorably-reviewed film there on Rotten Tomatoes (65% to Dawn of the Dead's 75%.) It may have to contend with Scary Movie 5 next week putting down the horror genre, but the laugh's on horror detractors since it will be in profit by the end of the weekend.
Spare No Expense
Jurassic Park cost $63 million to produce in 1993. Just a few years later, Titanic cost $200 and became the highest-grossing film in history, four years after Spielberg's film had claimed that crown over E.T.'s initial run in 1982. Amazingly enough, in 20 years, Jurassic Park has fallen to #22 on the all-time chart. Somewhat due to re-releases that gave its challengers a boost. Titanic 3-D opened on the same weekend last year to $17.2 million and went on to add $57.8 million to its domestic total. Jurassic Park 3D's $18.2 million opening should put it somewhere in the same vicinity over $50 million. Already leapfrogging The Passion of the Christ and Spider-Man 2 on the all-time list to make the Top 20 this weekend, here is what is up next for the dinos to feast on.
LOTR: The Return of the King ($377.8), Revenge of the Sith ($380.2), Finding Nemo ($380.8), Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($381.0), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen ($402.1), Spider-Man ($403.7), The Hunger Games ($408.0), Toy Story 3 ($415.0), The Lion King ($423.3), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($423.3)
Jurassic Park 3D would need $66.3 million to break into the Top 10 domestic grossers and $86 million to become the 16th film to hit the billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office. Only six films prior to Jurassic Park had even hit the half-billion line by 1993 (E.T., Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Terminator 2, Ghost and Aladdin). With little out there for families other than The Croods until Memorial Day, it could have a fairly healthy run over the next few weeks. Especially since word-of-mouth on the 3D conversion should be very strong.
Erik Childress can be seen each Thursday morning on WCIU-TV's First Business breaking down the box office on the Movies & Money segment.
