It’s been a crazy few months since George Lucas dropped a bombshell on the world by selling LucasFilm (and the rights to Star Wars …) to Disney. We’ve already learned there’s a new trilogy in the works, there’s been much discussion concerning standalone spin-off movies and a live-action TV series, and now there’s talk about adding a new animated show to the mix. Up until now, all this news has been great – we’re getting new Star Wars stuff! However, yesterday’s revelation was a little more bittersweet.
LucasFilm took to their website to reveal that while a new animated series is in the works, they’re prepared to wrap up their current series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars .
“As we enter into an exciting new era focused on the next Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm has decided to pursue a new direction in animated programming. We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming.”
That’s sad news for fans of Clone Wars – but fear not, LucasFilm insists they’re not pulling the plug immediately.
“While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we're continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content.”
We’re guessing they’ll be online somewhere, at some point, although whether or not that will serve as a stand in for an actual television series remains to be seen.
What do you think? Are five seasons and some bonus material a good stopping point for this series? Should LucasFilm have kept Clone Wars running along with another animated series? Where do you think they might go with a new cartoon in an “untouched” time period?
