Movie News: Disney Redoing 'Beauty and the Beast;' David Straithairn to Combat 'Godzilla'; Mel Brooks Documentary

Beauty and the Beast: Following the success of their live action Alice in Wonderland and now their Oz prequel (and because two other productions beat them to Snow White), Disney has picked its next fantasy property to rework: Beauty and the Beast. The studio, which also has a live action Cinderella in the works, has hired Joe Ahearne, one of the writers behind Danny Boyle's upcoming Trance, to script the movie, which is titled The Beast and will (obviously) be in 3D. Title-wise, it makes a nice counterpoint to the Guillermo Del Toro-planned version, called Beauty. Anyone else think Johnny Depp would make a great French candelabra? Anyone? [Deadline]

Oz the Second and Still Prequel : Speaking of Oz the Great and Powerful, the franchise is still no friend of Dorothy. Producer Joe Roth says the follow-up will "absolutely not" feature the young heroine of the classic MGM adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. Here's a prediction, though: Oz (James Franco) goes back to Kansas, gets back with Annie Gale (Michelle Williams) and turns out to be the true father of Dorothy, who we know to have been orphaned and raised by her aunt and uncle. Sounds a bit Star Wars-ish, doesn't it? Exactly. [LAT]

Godzilla and Good Luck: Another great actor is joining Gareth Edwards' Godzilla remake, this time Oscar nominee David Straithairn has been named to possibly join fellow rumored cast members Juliette Binoche, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston. His role is said to be some sort of military figure. Hopefully he'll have reason to channel "father of the atomic bomb" J. Robert Oppenheimer, who he's portrayed in two separte TV projects previously. At least make him say something about the monster being a destroyer of worlds. [Variety]

Haunter: The second SXSW midnight movie in two days has been acquired out of the fest. This time it's IFC Midnight picking up Vincenzo Natali's horror mystery Haunter, which stars Abigail Breslin as a teen girl reliving the day she died, her ghost haunting her still-alive self. [THR]

Mel Brooks Documentary Trailer: If you're a fan of the funny, you're going to want to tune in to PBS this May for the American Masters episode Mel Brooks: Make a Noise. This new documentary is directed by Robert Trachtenberg (who previously did a doc on Brooks actor Gene Wilder) and features interviews with Carl Reiner, Joan Rivers, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane and other obligatory collaborators and friends. Check out a trailer for the doc, which also hits DVD the month after next, below. [via Film School Rejects]
