Watch: The Director of 'Jodorowsky's Dune' Explains the Lure of the Greatest Sci-Fi Movie Never Made

In the pantheon of films that never got made but should have, it’s hard to top Alejandro Jodorowsky’s take on the sci-fi epic Dune . The Holy Mountain filmmaker’s planned adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic novel was going to be one for the ages – a fact confirmed solely by the people he’d enlisted to help him (Dan O’Bannon, Salvador Dali, Pink Floyd, and countless others…) and by a screenplay that was reportedly the size of a phonebook (it appears that Jodo’s take on the material would have resulted in a 14 hour film – an unheard of undertaking in the 1970s, but not so strange when one looks at things like Harry Potter today). Unfortunately, the project hit some financial snags and eventually stalled out completely. Jodorowsky’s version was never made.

That hasn’t stopped fans of the avant garde filmmaker from imagining what might have been, though – and one of those fans took his passion for the project even further, crafting Jodorowsky’s Dune , a documentary that just took Fantastic Fest by storm.

Dangerous Minds recently caught up with director Frank Pavich, and the ensuing 20 minute conversation is sure to delight fans of Jodorowsky’s work, Pavich’s documentary, and Dune in general. I cannot wait until I can finally see this documentary for myself. It’s pretty amazing according to everyone I know who saw it. Until then, enjoy this glimpse behind the scenes…
