There was a time when Disney Animation Studios was seen as a second-rate Pixar, and the saddest part about it is that they really didn't deserve the label. They've just always made animated films that were a bit sillier and a bit more traditionally kid-oriented. But as soon as Disney started making their own CG-animated films, people started comparing them with reigning CG-animated champs Pixar, and so it seemed like no matter how good their movies were, they came with the qualifier that they were, "Good, but it's not Pixar."
And then Wreck-It Ralph came along, and people changed their tone a bit. That was the first film in Disney Animation's CG catalog to convince the more stubborn fans out there that they can indeed make Pixar-level films (though one could certainly argue that the Pixar bar has simply dropped in recent years). And all of this is a long way of saying, will Disney Animation Studio's latest film, Frozen , keep earning credibility with adults and kids alike, or will it drop them down a rung or two on the ladder?
Judging by the new trailer, it looks like a bit of a step back-- on a purely technical level, at least. The backgrounds look blank and dead, rendering the world generic and lifeless. But maybe that's the point. We are talking about a world that is suddenly plunged into eternal winter, after all. We just hope that the minds behind Tangled can make the film's animation work to the advantage of its story, otherwise we fear this looks like a step back from the highs of Wreck-It Ralph (and Tangled, for that matter).
But what do you think? Are you excited for Frozen to hit theaters on November 27, 2013?
