Watch: 'Incredible Burt Wonderstone' Writers Talk Satire, the 'Vacation' Sequel and 'Freaks and Geeks'

It’s always interesting to track the evolution of various Hollywood talents from their earliest days into the whatever they become, but Freaks and Geeks has become a singular starting point for a remarkably high percentage of actors, actresses and filmmakers who now hold the keys to the kingdom, so to speak. Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Paul Feig, Jason Segel, James Franco, Linda Cardellini, Jake Kasdan, and now John Francis Daley have emerged from the show’s ratings-deficient genius to become stars and creators in their own right.

Daley spent much of the past decade growing up in front of the camera – quite literally – on shows such as Boston Public, Kitchen Confidential, and Bones. But he was simultaneously developing skills behind the camera, first writing Horrible Bosses and then moving on to The Incredible Burt Wonderstone , which opens Friday, the forthcoming sequel Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, and Vacation, a reboot of the National Lampoon’s series which he is co-directing with his Wonderstone co-writer Jonathan M. Goldstein.

Movies recently sat down with Daley and Goldstein in Las Vegas to talk about their work on Burt Wonderstone. In addition to discussing that film’s approach to deftly satirizing a field of entertainment often automatically perceived (fairly or unfairly) as a joke, the duo revealed some new details about Vacation, and talked about the legacy and impact of Freaks and Geeks -- not merely upon Daley’s career, but the world of moviemaking and comedy in general.
