The Best - and Worst - Movie Trailers of the Week

Star Trek Into Darkness makes another a strong play, delivering a brand-new teaser trailer that’s equally as thrilling as the rest. But even though the piece achieves an equivalent level of proficiency and excitement, it’s still the same in a sense, leaving room for three fresher feeling trailers to slip their way into this week’s Best Stuff.

The Best Stuff

1. Kick-Ass 2: Kick-Ass and Hit Girl are back, and this time around they’ve got an entire brigade of superheroes (sans superpowers) behind them. The plot follows the expected progression towards Red Mist-turned-Motherf***er’s revenge, but brings the series to a whole new level, loading up on striking costumes, highlighting far more intense battle sequences and expanding the cast with a variety of new characters, most notably a pleasantly less recognizable Jim Carrey as Colonel Stars and Stripes.

2. The Bling Ring: Spring Breakers does steal a bit of this teaser trailer’s thunder, but Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring still looks like an equally outrageous blast, and with far more realistic roots. It’s also quite refreshing to get a piece of promotional material that focuses less on famous faces and far more on the thrilling and intriguing story, and its electrifying tone and style.

3. American Mary: Short and sweet at a running time of just one minute 36 seconds, the latest trailer for American Mary powers through a disturbingly captivating scenario. A mere two shots to convey Mary’s choice to quit med school and two more to represent the reactionary move she makes thereafter function as the ideal set-up before delving into her twisted new line of work and absolutely nailing the teaser’s punchline.

The Worst Stuff

1. generation Um …: This movie already has a significant disadvantage thanks to that ridiculous title, but now stoops even lower courtesy of a frantic trailer with an uninspiring introduction from Keanu Reeves. Reeves is nice to look at, but even he can’t make that logline sound interesting. Sure enough, the narrative as presented in this promo is entirely unfocused, making the only elements concrete enough to get a handle on the more cliché components of the relationship drama.

2. InAPPropriate Comedy: As expected, InAPPropriate Comedy ends up 0 for 2 after the debut of its latest trailer. A good chunk of the piece consists of the same material from the red band one, but those moments make up the better portions of this promo, as we’ve already grown numb to the level of comedic failure they hit. It’s the newer scenes that further suggest the full feature might be shockingly bad that are the most disappointing.

3. Leonie: Leonie’s got a bunch of very positive critic quotes attached so there’s got to be something solid in there, but based on this trailer the film looks like a major snoozer. Perhaps Emily Mortimer’s performance really is as “radiant” as the quotes claim, but in the context of a trailer that isn’t engaging and has zero build, that, nor the story, shine through enough to suggest Leonie’s worth seeing.
