These Photos of Old Film Reels Are Beautiful

Bleu Film Reel Having been a movie theater manager before I became a full-time writer, I can attest to the fact that people find reels of film and the projection booth fascinating. No matter how jaded people were about the theater experience, they all jumped at the opportunity to get a tour of the booth. It’s easy to understand why – modern projectors and their gigantic platters holding interconnected reels of film are pretty cool looking. So are the individual reels that projectionists assemble into one massive whole before the first showing.

Austrian photographer Reiner Riedler clearly thought the same thing, because he’s used film reels from classic movies as the subject for his new project “The Unseen Seen.” The images are quite striking.

Riedler was granted access to the film archive of Berlin’s The Deutsche Kinemathek, where he photographed hundreds of reels of film – from classic features to lesser known productions with titles he found interesting. It’s amazing how some of the images evoke memories of the film in question.

Riedler describes the concept of the project as follows:

“The concept is to confront the viewer with the image of an object (film rolls) and in doing so recall images from the spectator's memory. By reading the movie title, I want to generate emotions and images from our memory.”
